In a world full of stress and health issues related to our lifestyles, running can be catalytically beneficial. Improved cardiovascular fitness and respiratory health, potential weight loss, strengthening of the immune system and improved self-esteem and emotional state. Running is an effective way to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and tension. It helps people who struggle with seasonal affective disorder by running outside when it’s sunny and warm. Running can improve mental alertness and also improves sleep, which is needed for good mental health. Both research and clinical experience have shown that exercise can be a treatment for serious depression and anxiety even some physicians prescribe exercise to most of their patients. Running can have a longer lasting effect than anti-depressants.
Our non-profit organization, RuNicosia, is promoting running and exercise in general as a means of improving physical and mental health, by encouraging people to run and exercise. Our actions comprise inter alia activities FREE of CHARGE such as the Kid’s Sports Academy, Adult Running Programs (Trexo stin poli mou), professional training tips/advice by renowned coaches and other professionals such as doctors, sports psychologists, sports nutritionists, in the form of videos, e-mails, etc., as well as lectures, interactive presentations, school visits/presentations, tv commercials and other.
Moreover, we organize races including the Nicosia Marathon, National Half Marathon Championships, Kid’s Marathon Races, Santa Roll Run (charity run) etc.
Our vision is to have running and physical exercise becoming an integral part of everyday life by educating people, but most importantly to children at young ages. This will be achieved by offering running training and education FREE of CHARGE to children and adult.
In our effort to encourage, attract and facilitate beginner runners start working out, we have training sessions/groups on a daily basis as early as 05:00 and 19:00 at night (Facebook Page/Group RuNicosia). These sessions are carried out by volunteers and can accommodate beginners as well as more experienced runners.
These sessions are carried out at the Strovolos Sports Center, Athalassa Park, whereas every Tuesday night we stroll downtown getting to know the various city neighborhoods. This action is supported by a series of 60” videos (sixty second intervals) containing training programs/tips, dietary and medical tips as well as other useful information from a wide range of professionals such as:
- Sports Nutritionists
- Exercise Physiology
- Sports Psychologists
- Occupational Therapists
- Sports Medicine
The running sessions are being supported by Emergency First Aid Responders (we provide free of charge Certified Training to all runners), and an AED.
The Children’s Academy is the most innovative Corporate Social Responsibility activity of the Nicosia Marathon and is in cooperation with the University of Nicosia and the Pancyprian Gymnastic Association (GSP) and Strovolos Municipality. The Children’s Academy will provide Free of Charge daily (Monday to Friday) between the hours of 14:45 to 18:30 training to children up to the age of 12 years old.”
